we also talked a bit about Yom Kippur Music, here is the email I sent to the class afterwords:
Hi Everyone,
We talked about yom kippur today and a bit about Sephardic music. Here are some youtube videos to learn more:
1. Adon HaSelichot (Master of Pardons) This one is traditional with English subtitles so you can understand the words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CayIX_PTBpo&NR=1
2. Adon HaSelichot #2 This is the rockin version. I hear the simcha, the knowledge that Hashem is waiting for us with open arms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfbIYO9jpds&feature=related
3. Aneinu (answer us) this version is from a Selichot concert, clearly the music can be meditative. This is one of the poems/songs/prayers that is often said line by line out loud by different members of the shul, each spontaneously singing one line each and the congregation answering "Aneinu", of course this singer embellishes... this is a great example of Sephardic chazanut. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2PN2rYLBpw&feature=related
4. This is a Neilah (the fifth and final service of Yom Kippur, when the gates are being locked up) prayer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6Mregs7nCI
the long introduction is common in middle eastern music, some last 5 minutes or more before the first word is sung
5. Here is Yossele Rosenblatt's Kol Nidre, he was the primer Askenazi cantor in the early 20th century. Caruso said of him that it was good he was a religious Jew, otherwise he'd be competition... www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMgiPSyX9YA
6. A classic Carlebach (he whistled a lot) Kol Nidreihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFxv_gI70ZU
7. Here's a Moroccan version of Kol Nidrei http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SjVRAIDbz4&feature=related
8. Finally, Barbara Streisand singing Avinu Malkeinuhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YONAP39jVE&feature=related
Have a great week and an easy fast! Gemar Chatima tovah,
Aliza
